The pajare are particular constructions typical of Salento (Puglia, Italy). Considered typically rural houses built using the drywall technique, the Salento is really full.
From a vaguely familiar aspect, reminiscent of the more well-known of the characteristic trulli of Alberobello, the pajare generally consist of a single environment that can vary depending on the size of the houses.
From the rather uncertain and controversial history, the Salento pajare have, certainly, a decidedly ancient origin, presumably to be placed around the year 1000 after Christ, even if some historians, going much further, arrive to date them in an earlier age, between the 2000 BC and the end of the Bronze Age. Whatever the origin, however, the Salentine pajare fully identify with the surrounding landscape, adding a pinch of folklore to an already fascinating and evocative territory.
Used by the farmers of Salento as a resting place after an intense day of work or to escape a sudden storm, the pajare often served as real summer homes, ideal for closely monitoring both the livestock and the most delicate crops .
