A year ago on my birthday I was lying in a hospital in Bali after being T-boned by a truck and thrown from my motorbike. This year I fell asleep under the stars on the Great Wall of China. So Iโ€™d say thatโ€™s an improvement. ๐Ÿ˜‰
::::::
Despite last year officially being my worst birthday, that accident knocked me off me feet in a good way, too.
::::::
Along with getting six metal screws put in my wrist, that spill awakened me to the need for some serious life changes, including taking ownership of my happiness.
::::::
Iโ€™d hated my birthday for ages, but after last year, I decided from now on I would celebrate this day even if it just meant planning a solo trip. ๐ŸŽ‰
::::::
This day would be SPECIAL, because Iโ€™m still here on this earth walking this magical and confusing and painful journey with Jesus, and no one โ€” not even myself โ€” can take that away from me. โค๏ธ
::::::
Thank you ENDLESSLY to everyone who made me feel so loved this past week and who celebrated with me from all over the globe. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ YOU make this all possible and Iโ€™m beyond grateful to have you following along on this weird, wild, wayfaring journey. ๐Ÿค—

Traveling is not perfect and this China adventure has been a challenge nearly every step of the way. But I have to say, this night with @destinationchaser, chopsticks ๐Ÿฅข and stir fry and sleeping bags and the sky full of stars over the freakinโ€™ Great Wall of China โ€” that was pretty perfect.โœจ

๐Ÿ’ป By the way, if you want to read about last yearโ€™s birthday & my accident, Iโ€™ve linked that blog post in my stories! Enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜†.

Our final stop on this month-long adventure around China: SHANGHAI!
::::::
Having a whole week in this city, we were able to settle in just enough to make it feel a bit more like โ€œhomeโ€ โ€” an apartment in a cute neighborhood, our favorite cafe with our favorite staff who gave us hugs and treats when we stopped in each day, even getting to connect with some of you guys who live in the area. ๐Ÿค—
::::::
We explored neighboring cities & water towns, danced the night away in the Bund ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ, went antiques shopping in Old Town, ate some seriously excellent food, and caught this perfect sunrise from the city rooftops. ๐ŸŒ‡
::::::
๐Ÿ“ท edited with my โ€œSaharaโ€ Preset โ€” swipe left to see the unedited photo! This preset is included in my Destinations Preset Pack (with 10 other presets I use to edit my photos for Instagram!), available at the link in my bio!
::::::
Thanks for making this rooftop sunrise happen, @chasingunique!.

Youโ€™d never guess that this enchanting, ancient little town was hiding here. You see, outside its crumbling stone walls is a city that... well... leaves a lot to be desired. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
::::::
Loud construction zones, streets torn up by jackhammers, trash dumps along the sidewalks, rats (@destinationchaser stepped on a dead one ๐Ÿคข), everything coated in a thick layer of grey dust... for a while, we were sure our bus had dropped us in the wrong place.
::::::
But after walking 30 minutes outside the main town, our map eventually brought us to an old stone wall with a small arched doorway, leading into Furongzhen Ancient Town. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
::::::
It was like stepping through a portal to another world โ€” from a dusty, dirty construction zone, to a fairytale-like 2,000-year-old village perched on top of a waterfall.
::::::
Although there isnโ€™t a ton of tourism infrastructure here โ€” a few small inns, tea houses, handicrafts shops, and restaurants (some with waterfall views) โ€” it felt like the most authentic town weโ€™d visited, where the Tujia Minority people still live and work and maintain their unique culture.
::::::
๐Ÿ“TRAVEL TIP: Furongzhen is midway between Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang and is often visited as a stopover between the two cities. Or you can make a day trip from Zhangjiajie โ€” the bus takes about 2.5-3 hours and costs $5 each way..

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณINFORMATION๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ
Tianxin Village is located outside of Yangshuo and Guilin about two hours by private car. A dreamlike place for shooting lifestyle in countryside.

Yangshuo is a small county inder administration of Guilin in Guangxi Autonomous Zhuang Ethnic Region in Southwest China. Normally people including Chinese knows Guilin, because it is the capital of Guangxi. In fact, all the most beautiful scenery you want to see or shot are located in Yangshuo. Guilin is hateway to Yangshuo.

The most famous and beautiful attractions you have in Yangshuo are: Li River, karst landscape and Yulong River, better-known as little Li River by locals. You have also many incredibly beautiful
hills for your camera, most famous are Xianggong Hill, Cuiping Hill and Laozhai Hill. The last mentioned is a wild one quite dangerous for climbing.

The night we landed in Chengdu, China was one of the worst travel experiences Iโ€™ve ever had. #ad
::::::
After realizing the hotel we booked didnโ€™t exist, and unable to reach our booking siteโ€™s customer service, we found ourselves stranded in the middle of the night with no where to sleep.
::::::
The next day, I rebooked a new hotel through the online booking service @zenhotels. Despite Chinaโ€™s National Holiday coming up, we found a beautiful, centrally-located, shockingly cheap hotel (8โ‚ฌ per person!) that redeemed our trip by hosting a hot pot party ๐Ÿœ and organizing a trip to see the Leshan Giant Buddha statue.
::::::
Iโ€™m loving ZenHotels for lots of reasons โ€” guaranteed lowest prices; a huge selection of accommodations from luxury hotels to budget hostels to unique finds (medieval castle, anyone?); and most important, a stellar 24/7 customer service experience that WILL NOT leave you stranded. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ
:::::::
You can get an extra 7% off your first booking before November 15 by using the code THEWAYFARESS. ๐Ÿ’ป I seriously recommend trying them out on your next trip!!
::::::
๐Ÿ“The Leshan Giant Buddha statue (shown in this photo ๐Ÿ“ท) is the largest stone Buddha in the world, dating back to 803 AD. The monks who built it hoped it would calm the turbulent rivers onto which the Buddha looks ๐ŸŒŠ โ€” it worked, because all the stone carved out of the mountain was thrown into the water, inadvertently altering the currents and calming the waters!.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Q&A with one of our top teachers, named ไธ้‘ซ and her English name is Clair. ๐Ÿ˜โžก๏ธ Follow @learn_mandarin_the_easy_way for more!
Q: How long have you been working for Easy Language Tianjin?

A: I have been working for Easy Language Tianjin for over two years now, and I have to say it has been my pleasure. Working with so many different types of students always enlightens my day.

Q: What are your goals as a Mandarin teacher?

A: As a Mandarin teacher, I have two goals. One is teaching the Chinese language to international students. And another one is transmitting Chinese culture to the world. You know China has a long history, and it has a broad and profound culture there are a lot of assets in it. So I think I have the responsibility for spreading it throughout the world to make more foreign people know about Chinese culture. And I feel teaching Mandarin is a proper way of transmitting it. So all and all, I try to reach these two goals to the best of my ability.

Q: What are the essentials of a good language student?

A: I think good language students usually have a lot of exceptional study abilities. So for me, there are two essentials which are the most important. One is persistence. Learning a language is a stringent process; if you cannot persist, when you meet difficulties of learning a language, it is easy for you to give up halfway. And another one is practicing. A language can be called a communication tool, so exercise is particularly important. After learning a language for a time you have to practice it as often as you can. Without practice, you will never know how to apply a word or sentence structure correctly. And functional language students, mostly do this part very well. So, as a result, I think persistence and practice are the essentials of a good student.

Q: If you can give one piece of advice to Mandarin students, what would it be?

A: One piece of advice I would give to a Mandarin student is paying close attention to the Chinese tones. In Chinese, there are four tones. And in some students' native language, there are no tones. So this usually causes some problems for the students to master Chinese fluently..
