All tests were fired together in gas reduction to a temperature range of cone 9 on the bottom and 6 on the top. The kiln was crash cooled from peak temperature down to 1300 F. so we could unload the following morning. There was so much excitement when we opened the door, but the triaxial glaze tests were some of the most interesting and varied results

A reimagined home in the tallgrass region of Kansas strives to honor its past and the land around it. When architect David Dowell and his wife, Kathy, purchased a historic 12-acre property in the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas, the couple took a decade to decide what they wanted to do with it. The couple eventually opted to renovate and expand the modest limestone cottage that was already there. The resulting stone-and-steel getaway sits on the rolling plain amid elm, silver maple, and eastern red cedar trees. “You don’t have to choose between old and new,” says David. “It’s a false construct in our brain to even think that way.” Peek inside the reimagined retreat when you try Dwell+ for free in the link in bio.

Located a few kilometres away from the Thai-Burma border is Green Island, a 1,590-square-metre youth centre that provides educational services to migrant youth. The brief to Estudio Cavernas (@estudiocavernas) was to create a public space to satisfy the needs of the community. The layout is divided into a community centre, football field, playground for kids and a food garden, harmonising with the big picture of creating a multipurpose space.
#

The firm trained members of the community for two years in sustainable construction techniques. This enabled them to source local materials by themselves. Using recycled teakwood, the migrants shared the construction load with the architects and designers, building their furniture on-site. The firm focused on a design that incorporated one single open space for security and child protection—they also made use of their signature style of creating triangular structures. #linkinbio

New Gourna Village, designed by a #pioneer of #sustainable #architecture , #HassanFathy was commissioned by the Egyptian Department of Antiquities in 1945. The goal was to use #localmaterials and techniques to relocate Old #Gourna a community of amateur #archeologists that had sprung up near the ancient sites, and in doing so, curtail damage and looting at nearby Pharaonic sites as well as facilitate #tourism development. Only part of the goal was realized.

The Ayurvedic Healing Village Kairali (@kairaliayurvediccentre) in Palakkad, Kerala is a 50-acres resort with 30 villas, built on the fundamental principles of vastu and harmony amidst a thick foliage of native trees.
#

Each villa shows heavy usage of the locally available laterite stones, red tiled sloping roofs and less usage of cement. A stream flows through the resort, thus bringing harmony to the surroundings rich with birds and about 48 species of butterflies. On offer are various Ayurvedic treatments here like abhyangam, shirodhara, panchakarma. More in #linkinbio

Day 2: Participants used the prepared resources to make various line blend and triaxial blends for clay bodies, slips and glazes. Although most materials had a low melting point, we were fortunate to have been gifted a bucket of local refractory clay from the Pygmy Forest - a nearby landscape defined by soil composition and topography which stunts the growth of all plants. The earth in this region is sandy, acidic, densely compacted and contains rare pockets of white/tan firing refractory clay. The clay itself is difficult to work with, but is a great component for blending.

The quiet coastal town of Alibag is known to many as the Hamptons of Mumbai. Much like New Yorkers’ relationship with the Hamptons, Alibag is where Mumbai’s well-heeled gather when they get sick of city life and traffic. Known more for its social life than its beaches (there are a very few and most feature black sand and heaps of trash), it is a great surprise for this writer to discover a pristine stretch of white sand, where one designer lives in maximum privacy.

The space’s focal point is what the Americans refer to as a great room—a central living and dining area that dominates. Rising above it are 30-foot-high ceilings that lend it an air of expanse, rivalled only by the sea in front. The great room has no ‘proper’ doors, windows or door; in keeping with the spirit of a beach house, the floor is sand. The floor plan upstairs mirrors the one downstairs to the extent that the first-floor balconies don’t even have railings. In the master bedroom, an antique bathtub sits on the outdoor terrace—presumably so that one can experience nature while being au naturel. For this designer and homeowner, design has always been a passion, and antiquing, an obsession. His interest in design was sparked by his career choice, but the love for antiques, he credits to the late Mahendra Doshi, founder of the eponymous antique and furniture store. More in #linkinbio

#repost from @studiolottedouwes Circular tableware collection by Lotte Douwes made of “waste” porcelain. ————————————————————————You’ll see me quote-on-quoting the word waste simply because it now seems pretty far removed from its original definition. A substance discarded after primary use, certainly, but unwanted or unusable? In doing so she’s highlighted one of porcelain’s most attractive characteristics, it’s translucency, which is thanks to the use of kaolin, a white clay which is mined in the mountains of China, in Jingdezhen.————————————————————————#ceramics #ceramic #porcelain #jingdezhen #china #jingdezhenporcelain #localmaterials #wastematerial #zerowaste #circulareconomy #circulardesign #reuse #reusable #recycle #upcycle #homeware #translucent #material #newmaterial.

Clay, kind of, as found (as given) in (by) nature, I haven't yet found a use for it, but it sure looked pretty. . The slice about one meter tall, for scale. . A slice, across, what would be "the hills" here because a right triangle of the hills removed from the hill, you see the A² (or is it B²? it's not C²) fresh and refreshed after a few million years. . And in that slice: clay, kind of. . Most of it is off-white, that is almost grey, and there are slayers, cuts, cobble stones of, pure white, and I took some of the pure white, thinking it'd be right, and worth the selectivity and effort (there is) to be selective to the tune of a 10-liter bucket when your hands are the selectors. . Clay that, I know is clay, because it feels like clay and can be thrown like clay, but, after that? . It's mostly solid at 1240ºC, and bubbly melt(ash) nasty at 1300ºC. Other similar clays (similar=from the same quarry, but otherwise not even fraternal in the physical characteristics) have similar melting properties but are easier to throw (this one is crumbly) ("easier" is relative, the usage; they're not throwable), so what should I do with a clay that melts lower than I want and throws less easily ("easy") than I want? . Maybe what I thought: mix it into a glaze, . but that means testing, and do you like testing? (does it matter if you "like" it?) . It's one of a number of clays I stole from the land some weeks—month(s)—back, and it's the last one I started to actually test (beyond the initial staged temperature melt test(s)) and so I can't say much now, I've still got to listen, but here I am, words to justify a picture, this is a picture of Austria, of Lower Austria, of Kattau, and the farmlands around, and this beneath the farm. . #processmatters #geology #loweraustria #localmaterials #wildclay #nativeclay #ceramics #nature #clay #madeinvienna ...
