Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Opposing colonialism and supporting indigenous populations is the very best way to protect both people and the earth.
This little map I made is by no means meant to be a complete or accurate representation of this land. It just scratches the surface of the vast populations whose land and cultures were stolen and trampled.
It’s complicated to explain to my young daughter why she doesn’t have school today and why it is still called Columbus Day here in Missouri. But you’d better believe we’re having the discussion in my house. We’re talking about how it’s never ok to believe your culture is superior or more “civilized,” especially when it is the one putting the least value on human lives and the health of the planet. About how we will not celebrate mass murderers simply because we are here because of them. We’re talking about how, as white people, we need to stop trying to prove that we’re not to blame for the genocide of our ancestors. That instead we need to be aware and do our best to help.
